Klaviyo vs Mailchimp: which suits a Kuwait online store?
For most Kuwait Shopify stores, start with Shopify Messaging, Shopify's own email app, because it reads your store data directly and gives stores on a paid plan 10,000 free emails a month. Move to Klaviyo when you need deeper segmentation and flows, and choose Mailchimp mainly if your business is not built around Shopify, after checking how it counts contacts. Whether email deserves budget at all is a separate question, answered in email marketing versus WhatsApp in Kuwait.
Store sync. An email platform for a store needs orders, products, customers and browsing events flowing in automatically, because those events trigger the messages that earn money. A flow is an automated sequence of messages that starts when a customer does something, such as abandoning a checkout or placing a first order. Check what syncs, how fast, and whether cash-on-delivery orders that are later refused or cancelled get corrected in the platform's numbers.
Arabic that renders right to left. A Kuwait store usually writes to customers in Arabic and English, so the editor has to handle right-to-left text without breaking the layout, and the platform should let you send each customer the version in their language. This is where the platforms differ most, and it gets its own section below, because vendors describe their support in very different words.
A second channel and a price that fits. Most email platforms now add SMS or WhatsApp, but availability depends on the recipient's country, and several SMS offers do not reach Kuwaiti numbers at all. Pricing is usually set by how many contacts you hold rather than how many emails you send, which matters for a Kuwait store whose customer file fills up with cash-on-delivery buyers and WhatsApp orders that never opted in to marketing.

What Shopify Messaging, Klaviyo, Mailchimp and Omnisend offer, as of September 2026
Shopify Messaging. Shopify's own app now covers email, SMS and WhatsApp campaigns, and needs an active paid Shopify plan to send to real subscribers. Its help centre limits SMS recipients to a short list of countries in North America and Europe, with no Gulf country, while WhatsApp marketing is blocked only for a few destinations such as the United States and China. Abandoned checkout automations are always free and do not count toward the monthly email allowance.
Klaviyo. Klaviyo's Shopify integration syncs orders, fulfilment and delivery events, products and onsite behaviour such as viewed product and added to cart, then keeps syncing in real time. Two details matter here. Its help centre says its revenue figure does not subtract cancelled or refunded orders, which flatters email results for a store with refused cash-on-delivery parcels. And Klaviyo SMS is not available in any Gulf country, although WhatsApp is, billed per message at rates Meta sets.
Mailchimp. Mailchimp for Shopify syncs customers, orders and shopping events such as checkout started, and its first sync brings in your existing Shopify customers with their subscription status. Its SMS add-on is limited to countries in North America, Europe and Australia, and its pricing page does not mention WhatsApp. It suits a business whose email list is not built mainly from a Shopify store, or a team already comfortable working in it.
Omnisend and Brevo. Omnisend syncs Shopify contacts, products, orders, cart activity and browsing, and supports one store per account, which matters if you run separate Kuwait and Saudi stores. It says it offers SMS worldwide, subject to local rules, while its channels page does not list WhatsApp; its help centre covers WhatsApp through third-party tools. Brevo frames its plans around monthly email volume rather than list size, and lists WhatsApp among the channels on its Professional plan.
How pricing by contact count really works
Free plans are small everywhere and similar in size. As of September 2026, the vendors' own pricing pages list 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month for Klaviyo; 250 contacts, 500 sends a month and 250 a day for Mailchimp; 250 contacts and 500 emails a month for Omnisend; and up to 300 emails a day for Brevo once your account is approved. Shopify Messaging gives stores on paid plans 10,000 free emails a month, then charges $1 per 1,000 up to 300,000.
The real difference is who counts. Mailchimp's help centre says subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts all count toward the plan limit, while archived and cleaned contacts do not. Klaviyo bills on active profiles, which it defines as contacts who may receive marketing email. Omnisend bills subscribers plus non-subscribers who received automated messages, and does not bill unsubscribed contacts. The same customer file can land in a different tier on each platform.
Say a Kuwait store syncs 4,000 Shopify customers, of whom 1,500 ticked the marketing box and 2,500 are cash-on-delivery buyers who never did; this is an illustration. On Mailchimp all 4,000 count, which puts the store in the 2,501 to 5,000 contact tier. Archive the 2,500 non-subscribed contacts, unless you use them for Mailchimp ad audiences, and the store drops to the 1,501 to 2,500 tier without losing anyone it may email.
Prices on these pages change often and are shown in dollars, so convert to KWD and date your comparison. Model the next twelve months, not today: if your list grows mostly during Ramadan, Eid and White Friday campaigns, a plan that fits in September can jump a tier by March. Also check whether going over a limit pauses sending, as Mailchimp's free plan does, or bills an overage, as its paid plans do.
Deliverability basics: Gmail and Yahoo sender rules for a Kuwait store
Deliverability is whether your email reaches the inbox rather than the spam folder or nowhere. Google's sender guidelines, as of September 2026, require everyone sending to Gmail accounts to set up SPF or DKIM authentication, keep valid forward and reverse DNS records, use TLS, and hold the spam rate shown in Postmaster Tools below 0.3 percent. Google advises staying below 0.1 percent and never reaching 0.3.
Senders of more than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail must also use SPF and DKIM together, publish a DMARC record, where a policy of none is accepted, align the From domain with SPF or DKIM, and support one-click unsubscribe plus a visible unsubscribe link. Yahoo's sender hub sets the same bulk rules and adds that unsubscribes must be honoured within two days. SPF, DKIM and DMARC are DNS records that prove a service may send mail for your domain.
A store that normally sends a few hundred emails a day can pass 5,000 in a single Ramadan or White Friday campaign, so set up the bulk-sender records from the start. Shopify's help centre says that without authentication and a DMARC record of at least p=none, your sender address is rewritten to a shopifyemail.com address, that a domain must carry only one DMARC record, and that a free Gmail address cannot be authenticated because you do not control its DNS.
Beyond the records, list hygiene does most of the work. Email only people who opted in, never addresses taken from cash-on-delivery or delivery forms without consent, and remove addresses that bounce. Don't judge deliverability by open rates alone: Google says it does not track open rates and cannot verify the ones third-party tools report. Watch the spam rate in Google Postmaster Tools, plus clicks and orders, instead.
Arabic RTL emails: what each platform supports and what breaks
An Arabic email needs its direction declared, not just its text typed. Set the dir attribute to rtl and the lang attribute to ar on the outer element of the email, or on each Arabic block. MDN, Mozilla's web documentation, recommends the dir attribute over the CSS direction property because direction belongs to the content, and it still works where CSS is ignored. That matters for any Kuwait store writing to Arabic-speaking customers.
Platforms describe their support very differently, as of September 2026. Klaviyo's help centre gives a short CSS snippet to paste into an HTML block so text blocks run right to left. Omnisend's help centre says it does not render right-to-left text natively, and that a direction style helps but punctuation and formatting may still break. Mailchimp flips signup forms and their response emails to right to left when translated to Arabic; for campaign content it points to translation links or conditional merge tags.
Shopify's Messaging help pages do not address right-to-left layout, but they allow custom Liquid and HTML in a code block of up to 50 KB, and they state that emails go out only in the language you wrote them in, so you segment customers by language. Klaviyo's Smart Translations, on paid accounts, lists Arabic among more than 60 languages but cannot translate product feed content. Machine translation still needs a Kuwaiti reader before anything is sent.
Mixed text is where Arabic emails usually break. A price such as KD 12, or an English product name inside an Arabic sentence, can jump to the wrong end of the line, so wrap those pieces in their own element with dir set to ltr, or use dir set to auto, which MDN says lets the browser pick direction from the text itself. Then send tests to the Gmail and Apple Mail apps on a phone, in light and dark mode, before every campaign.
When should WhatsApp carry the message instead of email?
Use WhatsApp for messages that lose their value within hours and need a reply: checking a cash-on-delivery order before dispatch, a driver's arrival window, a size question on an abandoned cart, or a restock the customer asked about. Email keeps the jobs that are long, visual or regular. The three-message sequence in abandoned cart recovery for Kuwait works on either channel, as long as you hold a contact and consent for it.
Recovery depends on having a contact at all. Shopify's checkout settings let customers choose a phone number or an email as their contact method, and Shopify says that to collect a phone as well, you make the shipping address phone number required. Klaviyo's Checkout Started event fires once the shopper enters an email. So a Kuwait store that allows phone-only checkout will have abandoned checkouts with no email to chase, and those can only be followed up on WhatsApp, with consent.
Cost decides most of the rest. Meta charges per delivered template message at rates set by the recipient's country code, and its pricing page says Kuwait moves to its own rate card on 1 October 2026, covered in the October WhatsApp pricing change. Beyond its free allowance, Shopify Messaging charges $1 per 1,000 emails, a tenth of a US cent each, so a weekly newsletter belongs in email and a one-line delivery update belongs in WhatsApp.
If you want fewer tools, pick a platform that runs both channels from one customer record. As of September 2026, Shopify Messaging and Klaviyo send WhatsApp through a connected WhatsApp Business account, Brevo lists it on its Professional plan, and Omnisend relies on third-party tools. Decide first whether you need the API at all, using the app versus API guide. You can start a free Shopify trial and send test emails from Shopify Messaging with your own Arabic templates before paying for a separate platform.
Frequently asked questions
Is Klaviyo or Mailchimp better for a Shopify store in Kuwait?+
For a Shopify store, Klaviyo is usually the stronger fit: its Shopify integration syncs orders, fulfilment and onsite behaviour in real time, and it can send WhatsApp at Meta's per-message rates, though its SMS does not reach Gulf countries. Mailchimp also syncs Shopify customers and events, but counts unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts toward its plan limit, which can push a store with many cash-on-delivery buyers into a higher tier. As of September 2026, both free plans cap out at 250 contacts or active profiles.
Which email platforms support Arabic right-to-left emails?+
As of September 2026, Klaviyo's help centre gives a CSS snippet that makes text blocks run right to left, and its paid Smart Translations include Arabic. Mailchimp switches signup forms and their response emails to right to left when translated to Arabic. Omnisend says it does not render right-to-left text natively. Shopify Messaging's help pages do not address it but allow custom HTML. Whichever you use, set the dir attribute to rtl and lang to ar, and test on phones before sending.
What are Gmail's bulk sender requirements?+
Google requires anyone sending more than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail accounts to authenticate with both SPF and DKIM, publish a DMARC record (a policy of none is accepted), align the From domain with SPF or DKIM, support one-click unsubscribe with a visible unsubscribe link, and keep the spam rate in Postmaster Tools below 0.3 percent. Every sender needs at least SPF or DKIM, valid DNS records and TLS. Yahoo applies similar bulk rules and asks for unsubscribes to be honoured within two days.
Can I send SMS marketing to Kuwaiti numbers from these platforms?+
Mostly not, as of September 2026. Shopify Messaging, Klaviyo and Mailchimp each limit SMS marketing to listed countries, mainly in North America and Europe, with Australia on some lists, and none of those lists includes a Gulf country. Omnisend says it supports SMS worldwide subject to local rules, so test delivery to Kuwaiti numbers before relying on it. For most Kuwait stores, WhatsApp is the practical second channel, and Shopify Messaging and Klaviyo can both send it through a connected WhatsApp Business account.
