What doing it yourself actually costs in hours

Six to ten hours a month once you are consistent, and closer to twenty in the first month. Priced at what an hour of your clinic time earns, DIY is usually the most expensive option on the table — which is why so few practising doctors sustain it past the third month.

The tasks nobody counts

Filming is the part doctors picture, and it is the smallest part. Deciding what to post, writing the bullet points, re-recording, editing, adding and proofreading subtitles in two languages, writing captions, scheduling, replying to comments, answering the DMs that follow, and looking at what worked — that is where the hours go.

Time yourself for one month rather than estimating. Almost everyone estimates two hours and records seven, and the gap is entirely in the tasks above.

Price the hour honestly

Take what an hour of clinic time earns you — consultations, procedures, whatever your actual mix is. Multiply by the hours the content takes. That is the real monthly cost of DIY, and for most doctors it exceeds an agency retainer before you count the value of the hours you did not spend with your family.

This is not an argument that you should hire someone. It is an argument that "free" is the wrong word, and that the comparison should be made with the real number rather than with zero.

Which hours to keep

If you delegate everything, delegate in this order: editing first, then captions and scheduling, then replying, then ideation. Keep the filming and the final approval — those are the two that cannot be outsourced without the content stopping to sound like you.

That split typically takes a doctor from eight hours a month to two, which is the difference between a habit that survives a busy quarter and one that does not.

Frequently asked questions

Can I batch it into one day?+

The filming, yes — two hours for a month. The editing and replying cannot be batched into the same day, which is the half people forget.

How long does the first month take?+

Roughly double, because you are learning tools as well as making content. Budget for that or the first month will convince you it is impossible.

What if I enjoy it?+

Then DIY is genuinely the right answer and you should keep the money. Enjoyment is the single best predictor of whether it lasts a year.
